You'd need to add the images the same way you constructed the bar - only problem is the collapse button is an img as well so you'd need to make the side images background and specify height/width of the block.

I just took a quick look at the original code on my site and this looks like it'd get you where you want to be.

forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost template will have the info you're looking for. Remember to subtract 2 from each colspan (it colspans per a vboption - 5 cells or if show moderators 6). Then add your new columns to the beginning and the end.
