There is an easier way to achieve what you want...
Most of the layout settings (linkbit, category style, etc) can be set on a per-category basis as well as globally. Basically, these settings are 'inherited' from parent to child, so each category either uses its own settings or looks to its parent.
So set up a new branches in your LDM, e.g. with a top level called 'photos'. On the add/edit category page for 'photos' choose the second tab (Control Settings) and define the layout that you want for this category and its children. E.g. tell LDM to use the photo linkbit.

I already had a copy with every script, table and reference renamed, but was waiting for you to return. Glad I did.
I just made two main categories Links and Photoalbum, and changed the navbar template to refer to them from different buttons.
Have to get some photo's in to see if it works, but I don't doubt that at all. I already thought this is a great add-on, but I now even think better of it
