I think when I change the name in the xml, use different directories and change the table it'll work, but I'm not sure if two versions will collide.
At the moment I use this 3.6 add-on on my 3.5.4 board.
I am trying to get a good integrated photo album, but what it there has too many problems, and LDM has proven to work fine for links, so why not as photogallery.
Using one version has the disadvantages that gallery and links categories will be together, plus I would have to use one lay out etc for both.

It is possible to install this more than once, but it needs some care and I have not tried the process myself. Basically, you will need to make a copy of each of the php files and give the copy a new name. You will then edit the copy of the file local_links_init.php to set up a new database table prefix and to point all the main control pages at the copied php scripts. Finally, you will need to edit all the copies of the main php scripts and check all the 'include', 'include_once', 'require' and 'require_once' statements.
There is an easier way to achieve what you want...
Most of the layout settings (linkbit, category style, etc) can be set on a per-category basis as well as globally. Basically, these settings are 'inherited' from parent to child, so each category either uses its own settings or looks to its parent.
So set up a new branches in your LDM, e.g. with a top level called 'photos'. On the add/edit category page for 'photos' choose the second tab (Control Settings) and define the layout that you want for this category and its children. E.g. tell LDM to use the photo linkbit.
