if you're still around here's an easy solution to your problem and one that i've used before....... set the forum as a link, with sub forums..... then set the link to something like..... www.yoursite.com/forums/whatevernameyouwant.html

and design a page with banners, or buttons linking to each of the subforums, that way if they click the forum, they're faced with the subforums (without any threads), however, if they click the sub forums from forum home they should go directly where u want them to go.......
