I desperately want to install the php portal hack, but am still too chicken.

I have installed the download private message hack, and the showmods hack with no problems. I have also done a little template customization.

What other hacks are good for beginners (for 2.0 boards)

p.s. has anyone found an easy way to get a side menu on 2.0 without template editing? The wrapper table doesn't work with many templates because the templates end the content table in the middle. Bad Jelsoft! Bad, Bad Jelsoft!
