In v 3,5,4 you can search for birthday in admin cp/languages and phrases/search in phrases, you can then edit to have it say what you want. Copied from that page for your info:-

If this birthday text isnt what you are looking for there are a lot more in the same place.

You can edit the Welcome message in the same place. Do a search for the first few words in the welcome message you have at present.
