I have some knowledge of php (having started learning it a month ago). I'm a network guy, but can read enough code to follow my nose and stick things together.

Basically with this, I know what I want to achieve, but have no idea how to begin doing this or even what I should be looking at.

Is there a term for doing this kind of thing?

Are there articles on how to do it already?

What specifically should I be looking for or learning about to actually accomplish this?
