Portal pages, especially 3 column ones, are always horribly cramped. I think it'd be better to go with 2 columns: News on the left, Various lists on the right with some space to breathe, and the user cp colspanned across the top.
At least make the boxes wider on all the styles (except dark blue where you can't)
