Nah doesnt work. It looks at the joindate and then works out the math, rather than looking at the date subscription started, and is due to end. Does that make sense?

So if I use that code for those that have subscribed, it says something like -577 (minus xx days left), depending how long they've been a member for.

The code above is only useful for new users who sign up. Stick them in a group and then using the "promotion" tool to de-promote them into another group after XX days.
