How do I integrate both login and user "status" on non-vb pages?

I'm wanting to let people login from non-vb pages as well as show if they are logged in or not. So after they logged in it would do things like show links to the User CP or other things...based on if they were/were not logged in.

I'm almost positive I've seen links to this around here before but can't find them for the life of me.
