In the 'free' category the two big ones are Coppermine and Menalto Gallery. There are also a few hacks available here at vB.org that may do what you want.

In the 'commercial' category there is PhotoPost Pro and PhotoPost vBGallery, both available at PhotoPost. If your needs find yourself not happy with any of the free offerings then either of PhotoPost products would like be a nice fit.

None of the galleries require vBadvanced CMPS or any other portal to be installed. Note, though, that MKPortal, a cross-forum portal package, does include basic 'gallery' type functionality.
