You'll have to use a normal news reader and look at message numbers for you want to start at for each group you are mirroring and put that number in the 'Last Message Number' field in the control panel alongside each group.

Of course, it's much easier to just keep pulling the news until you catch up then purge the old ones if you don't want them

It's only a one time operation anyway.
