Finally got it to work with my site (which doesn't allow mod_rewrites). Had to edit the vbseo_ sitemap_functions file and hard-coded the actual pathname to a different data directory on my server which I am saving the .gz files too. I couldn't use the default vbseo_sitemap/data directory because of the mod_rewrite problem within the .htaccess file. Works now though.
