vB CMS - Totally Custom Page For Homepage?

Hi -

I'm trying to get a completely custom page to show up when people go to the root of my website (e.g. www.domain.com)

I've tried changing the setting in Admin CP to specify a custom page...

I don't think that's it, though. Everything was fine until we switched to this design and CSS.

Am I being stupid - can't seem to find any way of allowing users to choose an avatar during their registration (either option or hack).
