In future, you should try the vBulletin 4 option first as quite often code is cross-compatible between 3.8.X and 4.X - or will require minimal effort with little to no coding experience.

I am using PHP 5.6 with vBulletin 3.8.9 - I would assume it would be ok. If not, why not ask your host to support multiple PHP versions? If not possible, I'd look elsewhere as many companies do this...
