I am able to read forumid, threadid, and postid (of forumdisplay, showthread, showpost) in init_startup using $_REQUEST[f], $_REQUEST[t], and $_REQUEST[p] respectively.

I am trying to work out a simple plugin as follow:

location: init_startup
$savevar = 'test';

in footer template, I added the following:
{vb:var savevar}

Unfortunately this didn't work. ...
