Turn off forums daily with cron

In order to take backups, I want to disable the forums and dump the database on a daily basis, but I don't want to manually disable/enable them.

I've tried to just edit the setting in mysql, but...

No problems, but I'd like to have a more detailed logging system. If I could, I would almost like to consider logging page views on certain forums, but that would get to be a little too much.
