On the test site I'm using, spaces in usernames don't appear to cause a problem.

However, this is based on a grand sample of 1... and I haven't yet tried other disallowed characters.

True, but the built-in system is a bit clunky to use if you're inputting a large number of questions. We use a rotation of 50 on ours (alongside captcha), and found this mod much easier and quicker...
