User Color on index page

I was just wondering if it was possible to make a user's color show up on the index page as well as other pages where it shows info about the latest post and who posted it.

On my site when you select to have no post icon in your thread it automatically uses the default which is the piece of paper, how do i make it not use any post icon unless the user selects to use...
