latest thread hack for main index

I'm looking for a hack to display the latest threads posted on. I'd like them to display in a box on the right side of my page, you can see an example at youngcoders.com (they have it on the left...

Is there an easy way to mod this so no avatar shows up at all?

I don't want users using avatars (only contrubuting members; even then it's one I choose {goldstar}).

Any idea?
