I've added a column to the forum table and can reference the value in a conditional via $foruminfo[varname] in the forumdisplay template but what I really want to do is use it in the ad location...

There's no vbcms_widget_shadow_color stylevar in the 4.1.10 CMS Suite. Set it manually or add a stylevar for it, and remember this isn't going to work in IE.
