New import system...
 

OK. So im sure that there has been dozens of posts like this already, its just I've been around and only recently got back to vb.org (not by choice, my site closed down when i moved house 3 years ago. Now im in uni, I got the internet again!).

Anyway...enough of my life, heres the point of this thread. The new import system included in vb3.5.1 has confused and annoyed me a little bit. Back in the days I remember (vb2 and the start of vb3) I remember learning templates, phrases and VB through instructions in notepad. I enjoyed installing bits myself and through actually reading it and typing (copy/pasting) it, if something didn't go as it should i had some ideas where to look.

However, now with this one click install jobby, i find it very lazy and annoying. I've tried 3 installs and all 3 came back with some erros (and i have no idea where to look!). Im not a coding pro, but i feel having a little bit more involvement with my code wouldn't be a bad thing. Sure, at times its good to be lazy, but... i dunno. maybe its just me.

I would be interested to see what you think.

(Also : How good is the import system with other hacks installed...e.g will it override edited code thus distroying forums???)

The plus sides far outway the cons in my opinion to be honest ..... I do agree with what your saying, as I have come across the same kind of situation, but when you consider you can upgrade a version of vbulletin that is hacked to high hell, in probably 5-10 mins tops, in comparison to this being sometimes a week of a job, obviously depending on your coding knowledge, the action speaks for itself.

Besides this, it is also better for someone who has no coding knowledge as it ensures they can also recieve full support from the official site regardless of how many hacks the have installed, due to the fact they have not voided there support by editing any vbulletin code.


There will always be pro`s and cons against these things, and I too would like to know where to start if something goes wrong. Therefore I have taken the route of DIY, and learning php :) ... guess ya could say it gave me a kickstart

aye. thats a good response...i just wish that people releasing mods for VB would incldue both the instructions aswell as the simply click to install....

meh...things never go my way :)
