vb.org Archive - IMAP Authentication?

Is it possible to perhaps get around the "registration of users" for VBulletin by taking a username and password they have and get it to authenticate to an IMAP server? If their authenticating against the IMAP server, then create a local account with that username and password (both of which they cannot change). But every subsequent login attempt is always authenticated on the IMAP server to ensure their still on it. If in the future they are removed, so is their forum access.

I hope all that was clear. Is it at all possible?
