Core dumps - could a mod be causing these?
 

I'm getting a whole load of "core.xxxxx" files appearing in my forum root (xxxx being a seemingly random number)

These files are roughly 5 megs in size and appearing a couple of times every hour. It seems that they are generated by the server when a script fails to execute correctly.

My installed mods include:

show visitors on index
sigmachat integration
vbadvanced gallery (different directory though)
vbadvanced cms (directory above the forums)
moderator permissions
vbjournal
gallery images on index
lock out anyone under 18 hack
signature options

possibly a couple more that I can't remember right now.

Can anyone tell me if they have had similar issues and how they dealt with them ... or better still how to deal with them with no shell access to the server.

Do you have access to apache and system error logs?
If so, what does appear there?

Normally, I'd say that Hacks can't cause this, seems to be more likely a problem with PHP itself.
Do you run eAccelerator or smth. similar?

I don't even know what those things are ...

I know that I've recently moved the site from phpbb to vbulletin and also moved server ... this means that we're getting a lot of 404 errors at the moment because of outdated links and files.

These are the only logs I have access to ... I've only just found an option to turn on a "raw log manager" although I have got an option to add an apache handler ... whatever that is

The webhost insists that it is a script causing them and nothing to do with the server configuration.

On opening one of the core.xxx files I did a search through the gobbledegook for ".php" and "cron.php" came up a hell of a lotl

I think I've sorted it ... I woke up this morning with 13 of them in (2 per hour) ... 3 hours ago I removed the cronjob that looked up who was in the chatroom and haven't had any coredumps since.

I'll post again if they start up again
