Request: Podcasting

I would like to request a podcasting add-on for vB 3.5. I just mentioned it in the vBRadio 1.0 for 3.5 thread.

I can help with this, but I'll need some leg work done.

Links to software to host your own server software (if any).
Links to client software.

What do you want the hack to do?

I have not read up on podcasting yet, but more info would help push your request.

I'd like to request this too. I think this can be used somehow inconjuction with vB's RSS/XML functionality. If a [private] forum is created for the feed, the url would be http://www.domain.com/forums/externa...rss&forumids=8.

The only difference between a blog and a podcast as far as the RSS is that Podcasts are linked through <enclosure> tags, such as
Code:

<enclosure url="http://domain.com/path/to/file.mp3" length="37963779" type="audio/mpeg"/>
Length is the file size in bytes.

I would think the files can optionally be attached within the post, but they can be upwards of 40MB, so FTP might be a better option.

A good tutorial on creating RSS (includes info on the enclosure tag) is at http://www.podcast411.com/howto_1.html

And as a side-note, I always run RSS feeds like http://www.domain.com/forums/externa...rss&forumids=8 through FeedBurner and advertise that output. vB's output isn't the greatest.

I'll read up on it and see what I can do.

Cool. The more I think about it, the more I think that this should be more of a blog tool than a podcast tool, since the only addition for a podcast is the enclosure tag. I would think this would be easy to add once the framework is there.

I would encourage you to check out WordPress (www.wordpress.org). I think it's the best blogging software.

Developing a true blogging system for vB would be very cool indeed. The framework is already there as far as exporting forum posts as an RSS feed.

Lemme know if I can help in any way.

I have a GPL script that I think keeps tracks and auto blogs .... I'll have to look @ it ... Give me some time, I have a few hacks I am worken on @ the moment. If I pass by more info I'll post it here to add to the collaboration of the project.

Thanks to everyone for outlining some of my requirements for me. Zachariah had a very legitimate question :), sorry about that. When I posted the above I was envisioning a navbar dropdown or popup a la VBRadio, but I really like the idea of feeding forums, too. Feeding events would be interesting as well, especially if the cast were a scheduled one.

Since we're still working out the whats and hows, thought I may as well link to the full-blown Wikipedia article, which introduces a few other possibilities into the mix (including VODCasting). Don't want to blow the scope of this request out of proportion or anything. :D

I'd be interested in seeing where this idea goes as well......

NxTek, the link you gave for Podcast411 proved informative, thanks. Now I've got a few ideas brewing in my head as a result. :p
