header ("Location: .....

I have:
$loc = "http://www.site.com/forums/directory...search=$string";

and I am trying to redirect to:

header ("Location: $loc");

the $location and $string return blank.

I can echo them, so they are there.

Are there any rules to parse variables into header(location ?
