Two problems: please help

I am running a somewhat heavily moded board, thus asking the question here, instead of vb.com. Users are complaining about 2 problems, maybe they are related, can't tell:

1. When users log in they see "new posts: XX" but when they click on it, it shows no new posts message. It's not doing it all the time, just some times.

2. Once in a while, some users report clicking on an internal link, and getting a blank page with > as the only thing on it. They hit "refresh" and it fixes itself, and goes to the destination. Again, not always, just sometimes.

Any ideas?

What vB version are you using, and what hacks are installed?

I guess I should have mentioned it :) It's 3.04 but patched through 3.08. There are way too many hacks to mention. Big ones are VBAdvanced CMPS and VBGallery. Just added the Geek Article system, but it 's been happening for a while.

Tracking a problem that doesn't happen all the time would be very difficult.

However - for the new posts - do you have some forums that are not visible to all users (such as staff forums) - if so then the new posts shown are probably in areas that the member does not have access to - most new posts code does not take this into account. This was a problem on our forum so I updated our new posts hack to only count those that a member had permission to view (not available in the released version atm).

Paul, thanks for your help. I dont think that it's the "invisible" forums, because I will see, let's say 20 new posts in my top box, then I click and it says there is none. I go back and I see new posts because forums light up w/ "new posts" icons, and there are new posts. Not just in the staff area (which, yes, I have) but in the gen. area too.

If you dont mind can you give me an idea how to check for new posts while ignoring the "private" areas?
