Installed vs. Currently Installed hacks

I think the "Installed Hacks" feature is great, but could use some embellishment to make it more useful.

Like others I do not click "uninstall" once I have removed a hack, if it worked but it did not suit my needs. I like to click on installs that worked as advertised, to show my support for the hack authors, however the list is useless to me when I go through it to try to figure out what I actually have currently installed.

I would like to either see the "hacks installed" list sortable by the date you clicked "Install," or better yet have checkbox column that would appear on the list of installed hacks, with each hack listing, and you could click in the box if it is "currently installed." The checkboxes would have no affect on the HOTM, or number of installs- it would just be for the end-user to keep better track of what they have installed currently.

I like the idea of a checkbox column whenever you view your installed hacks.

IMHO it would be a better Idea to click Uninstall when wou don't use a Hack any longer.
Doesn't make sense to keep it listed as installed, doesn't it?

I think it does make sense. I really appreciate the talent and hard work of most of the coders here, and I like to show my appreciation for sharing their hard work by clicking install on their hacks once I have checked it out, even if I decide later that the hack doesn't suit my needs anymore. I think that alot of folks feel this way since I see this sentiment (regarding not clicking uninstall) expressed by many other people, including top mods here. I think it would only take a small bit of coding to add a checkbox, and that would satisfy a lot of people who would like this feature as well.

Well, if the majority of the community upgraded to vB3 and thus do not use the vB2 hacks anymore, that would basically be a slap in the face for all the hard work put in to the vB2 hacks...

But there's the dual meaning of 'installed'

e.g.

I have got these hacks currently installed.

vs

I have installed these hacks in the past, they're pretty good.

If you want to insist on the current situation being adaquate, the ambiguity should be resolved by renaming it to 'currently installed hacks'

Personally, I'd like a 'currently installed' AND 'previously installed' options as mentioned previously.

Along the same lines I seriously doubt that 1500 people still have Chen's vb 2.2.X "Quick Reply" hack installed, or for that matter I seriously doubt that "vBIndex" has 859 CURRENT installs, so it seems that many other people here must feel the same way about not clicking uninstall.

>> Actually Installed
>> Total of Installs

this would be the BEST statistic possible for this request... and i've stated that long time ago... it's soooooo simple to add a count of active installs... it's the kind of things that make things more precise!

Andreas 08-30-2005 08:36 PM

Hmm, seems like I got a different understanding of "Installed" as the majority then.
OK, adding "Please only click Install if you actually have installed/are using this Hack, and click Uninstall when you don't use it any longer" to my Relases.
