change look to match my site

I'd like to make vB 3.5 look like this page on my site.
http://www.bloodbanktalk.com/test.cfm
I know this site is ColdFusion.

How do I even start something like this?
I've seen a lot of site do it and really like the look.

As an added bonus I'd love to have the navbar vertical and on the left, but I'll be happy to start with the layout first.
