prevent use of shorthand/sms language

I was wondering is it possible to create this?

You would have a list shorthand/SMS language. When a user makes a post, it checks the words and highlights the selected words and asks the user to change them, or it changes them and highlights them to the correct version.

I guess I could use the censor options to block the shorthand/SMS language but the older posts will become unreadable if they contain shorthand/sms language.

Another possible solution could be that it becomes an optional user feature, so by default all SMS language is converted to normal language but the user has the option to see the SMS version.

I guess you could achieve this by replacements, but users will always find a way around it just the same as they do with the swear filter.. I personally just try to grin an bare it.

I guess so, Oblivion Knight, but not everyone can read or understand sms language, even though they might be avid mobile users. Most of my friends tend to use standard language when sending text, only a few use SMS language. Which some times can be hard to understand, as they try to shorten words because of the limit.

But on the forums, there is no such limit (well not on my forum anyway) so why not use standard english.

There must be a good solution someone can think of?

Yeah, make it a rule that they can't do that... and have your mods take care of the rest.

Not everything can be automated... ;)

Actually there is a hack which can replace words with other words for example if a user says w8 it will replace it as wait and so on This is all that is needed to take care of this problem. You could replace heaps and heaps of words and im sure that will fix most of the posts, next time you see a word that gets past the filter, just add it to the filter, you soon will have a very good database of words to fix the shorthand problem.
