Profile field editing for certain usergroups only

I'd like to be able to have the edit profile page only show certain custom profile fields for specific usergroups. (Not looking for a separate edit page, which I've seen some hacks do).

Need this for 3.08 also, so please excuse duplicates.

If someone has an idea on how to implement it would be great.
