Removing attachments from a certain category only?

In consideration to "saving" our users post counts... we've created a sub-forum (Archive) where all posts are moved to after soo many days. what we'd like to do is remove all attachments from that category without removing the actual post so that the users post counts are not altered. how is this possible?
