vB3 adding overall BG image without replicating it in posts

hi,

i'm new to theming vB3 (did some vB2 theming but not that much) and now i've got a problem :D
when using a background image in the class "page" for a nice gradient or some other image the same image will be replicated in the background of every post in a thread due to the fact that these posts rely on the spacer_open template.
but the main problem is: the spacer_open template seems to be used for the main background too. so i can't use 2 different classes (one for the main background and one for the background of the posts)
any idea how to solve this problem?
