Style Thread View w/o using Alt 1 or 2

I've searched around, and viewed the source in my browser. But I see no solution. But being a beginner, I'm sure I overlooked something. Is there a way I can control the styles of the thread tree in thread view, without using Alternating 1 and Alternating 2.
