The dreaded red x

I need help installing skins.

I have figured out how to upload through the admin control panel.. but it jsut does the forum colors.. not any of the buttons or anything- I keep getting the dreaded red x.

I have a few quetions.. apparently I need to upload the images, buttons, smilies, etc to a server.

But the smilies etc are exactly what come with the default skin...do i still need to reupload them?

And also exactly where do I upload them? Do I use the admin control panel? Do I need to upload them with a FTP client to my server? If so. should I put them in a certain folder? Do they all go together- or in different areas.

How does the file I upload in the admin control panel know how to "find" the images? I am worried I will put them in the wrong place.

Obvioulsy I am very very new.. and need hand holding. If you are kind enough to respond with directions.. please be very explicit.

Thanks So much,

If the buttons are exactly the same as the default skin and named exactly the same in the templates, you can just go into your Style Settings for that particular style, and edit the image paths (all of them) back to their default paths. (eg. for button image folder, the default paths is images/buttons) and that should do the trick.

If they are not all the same or named differently in the templates, check your style settings, those image paths, and see what they are set to. Then create the folder and upload the images where the image paths are pointing to.

I am sorry.. that means absolutely nothing to me. I go to styles manager and the

buttons path is "fairytale/buttons"

Where do I create this folder? and how do I get the images from the file I unzipped into it? Do I need to use a ftp program?

Is there a tutorial somewhere with step-by-step directions?

Is is much easier than I am making it out to be?

Did you install vb yourself or get someone else to do it? (Just curious :) )

You'll need to upload the images to your server via ftp.

Go into your forum directory and upload the whole fairytale directory from your harddrive to it as it is... ie, all the subdirectories as they stand - fairytale, fairytale/buttons, fairytale/misc, etc.

if you need any help, and none of the guys here have time, I'm not overly busy over the next day or so lol - hacks I can't write.. uploading styles, software, etc I can <grin>

Yes you need to use a FTP Program.

You create the 'fairytale' folder in your default forums directory.

Upload them into the fairytale folder you create.

No a friend very kindly installed it for me. However, I would like to become master of my own domain. I don't want to bother him all the time. He runs a differnt forum program than vbulletin..so every time I ask him a question he has to look it up.

I appreciate the help. Maybe you can make a sticky thread at the top on how to install for the new and or ignorant  I am hoping I am not the only one who is at this level of learning.

Many thanks to azhrialilu and Tony for responding.

Ok.. I opened my FTP program and I see 2 main folders.... "Forums" and "Images"

Under "folders" is admin1cp, archive, client script, cpstyles, custom avatars, images, includes, install, modcp, modules, and subscriptions

Under "Images" there are: attach, avatars, buttons, editor, gradients, icons, misc, polls, ranks, rating, reputation, smilies, status icons.

Should the new style (in this case 'fairy tale" be a separate folder on same level as "folders" and "Images" or put inside one (and which) sub folder listed?

I really apprecieate this.

your image paths should be like this
fairytale/buttons
fairytale/statusicon
fairytale/attach

and so on

if your fairytale image folder is in the forum directory the images will show. it should have automatically once the images were uploaded to the server in the proper location and the xml file imported.
so your path to your images should be like this
mydomain.com/folderyourforumisinstalledin/fairytale/

sorry about the confusion. i will make sure to make clear instructions on the next release

See that is the problem.. I don't know how /where to put the fairytale into the forum directory.
