Ever think about styles for connection speed?

I was just poking across the internet today at work, on the good old NAVY lan which when everyone is online is worse than AOL on a 28K connection.

I got to thinking, anyone ever design templates/user styles for say BROADBAND and DAIL-Up users.

I was just thought I might create something like this for my next project. I usually don't like users changing my styles, I like forcing my design apon them :)

A style for broadband and a style for dail-up.

Anyone else doing anything simlair?

I usually try to keep both in mind when making my design. One problem with having two layouts like that is that they have to be able to change the layout. If you make the lowband style default, it will obviously not be as appealing to visitors. If you make the broadband version default, you are expecting users on a slow connection to sign up and then figure out there is another option, but all the while they are crawling like a snail and waiting for images to load.

Everyone of your sites looks like it has a broken header in firebird. I hate to tell you this. But on the bright side, it is probably pretty easy to fix.

Lesson learned in using the same site files over and over to design the next one; heh? (All of my sites, with teh exception of TTAC, are being redesigned this month, lots of construction)

:) I have usually try to think of both users, but good points. Hurm...

More discussion!

Of course, I make styles for both broadband users and dial-up. I like to run forums that are user friendly for all connections. :)

I prefer to make a 2nd style set called "excel", it makes the forums look like an excel document, all images taken away, just text, very corporate looking. Great for browsing at work on a DS3 connection! ;)

My site is dialup friendly, but I am always working on making it better. By utalizing gzip, my index page has 11.2KB of text (down from 64.8KB unziped) and ~20KB in images. However, even then, the site looks great, almost a "broadband" look. Optimizing the site for dialup users really helps on the bandwidth charges as well.
