New Site Idea

I have been talking with my friend about opening a new service site. when i say service, i mean something completely unique. Many people nowadays are hosting profile sites that contain examples of their work to show companies and whatnot. We want to help these people get a portfolio up and running for free/cheap.

The way it would work:

A user would sign up for the free service, and be allowed to upload a few images and links (around 4 or 5 or so). That would be completely free for an unlimited period of time. Then, we would have plans for more space/images/links. They would not be extremely expensive or dirt cheap, but reasonably priced.

I was just wanting to ask you guys what you would think about a site like this:

-Would it work?
-Would we make money?
-Would YOU sign up for its free/cheap service?
-What could we do to improve this idea.

Sean and i have just started talking about this, so it will take quite a long time to develop the site: Designing, coding, promotion and all that good stuff.

Please give us your honest opinion as to what you would think about this! Vote on the poll too

Thanks a lot,
Cypher

btw - this has also been posted at yaxay:)
I'm looking foreward to hear what you guys think

i forgot to add that the user who registers will automatically get a subdomain (kinda like yaxay: http://cypher720.yaxay.com) to allow for easy access - *** opposed to http://www.site.com/users/cypher720

And this is different from hosting?

Cypher720 12-17-2002 12:27 AM

its cheaper, and you dont have to upload all the files (index and stuff). It will be all a nice easy and user friendly syste...you just cluck the upload button and the script will take care of displaying it nicely so you will look professional to your "boss"...u know what i mean?

you dont have to upload everything...jsut the images

and if you vote (i hope you will), please say WHY you voted yes/no

Alot of hosting servies allow:

-Sub domains
-Free services with better plans to get more.

So, I wouldn't classify it as too unique. I know some free servers which allow sub-domains for free.

i dont think i explained it clearly...cause you guys think im offering hosting. im not.

i will be offering online portfolio services made easy. not webspace. You can upload images via a control panel, and have them instnatly be displayed in a clean, professional way, with a description and all. The service will be for people who do not know about coding ad HTML and stuff...only designing.

Understand it any better?

Apple's .Mac service already does this, too.

Tony G 12-17-2002 12:46 AM

Yes, well not that I care but it's an okay idea. :p

Cypher720 12-17-2002 12:48 AM

but many people dont have macs:) ui dont know..its just an idea. we will probably go through with it...just askin for ideas.

i see whaere you guys are coming from. but how many hosting companies are there...there is always room for another!

(and to be honest...i had no idea apple even HAD a .mac - i just saw it when you mentioned it!)

Because there are alot, you need to compete. Being average won't get you customers. You need to have good, affordable prices first. Because you won't make anything if your payments are a notch above the rest.
