.jpg file in header

can I use a .jpg file in the header?

what would be the advantages/disadvantages to this.

would it be as simple as changing the file name in the header template?

Yes you can; no major disadvantages other than those associated with using JPEGs in the first place. Yes, it's that simple.

If you have a monocromatic header image use a .gif/.png; if you have many different colors or don't need extreme detail, use a .jpg.
