Save Your Templates

Always save your templates before edit them. vBulletin always allow you to restore the original template, but what if you make an error on a template that you've heavily customized?

If you're editing your templates with an external editor, then this makes things easier. Personally, I save every template is a special folder on my hard drive. I usually keep the last two versions of each template just in case. I simply save them by their template name. So, my postbit is saved as postbit.html on my hard drive.

Although this site does not support, or discuss hacks, another option is to use Firefly's Hack Template Backup System (TBS) [link]. If you have questions on how to install, or use this hack, please visit vBulletin.org.

Regardless of which method you use, saving your template files can be a real lifesaver should you make a mistake. And mistakes DO happen. :)

I always make backups or paste what code I edit on a notepad and edit it then so if I make my mistake I can restore the original code block. It's very important to do that. :)

I only normally edit templates when I know that I can fix errors. It's normally not too hard, although If I'm unsure, I just paste the contents into notepad and carry on editing :)

It's just obvious to make backups. I learnt after reading a mod disclaimer. So reading a few tips can save you.

I used notepad to back up code bits for a while but found it way to pain staking after a while. When I got to work on a style, I create a child style, and if the changes work, I delete the parent and use the child. If they don't work, I use the parent. That way I have a current version and don't have to worry about a time frame of notepad edits.
