how can i make it so that the table cells have no colour

this is so that i can show up a background image, i have tried removing the bgcolor="#000000" from within the <td> but the table cell just comes out white, now i could just put the code (background="starbackground.gif") within the <td> but the image is big and wont show properly, so any suggestiosn on how i could stop the cells coming out white and to be clear would be greatly apriciated...
