How to exclude usergroups from total member statistic

On the forum home page statistics at the very bottom there is a Members statistic that sums all members in all user groups. I think this number is misleading since it includes Users Awaiting Email Confirmation and Banned Users. Is there a way to exclude these groups from the member count? Also are there any hacks for this section of the forum -- i.e. the forum statistics in the "What's Going On" section.
