Use Email and Password as Main ID?

Hi,

I wonder if it's possible to modify VBulletin so that a user could use his/her email address along with the password as the main identification information both at registration and future logins. It's sort of similar to the registration and login process on NY Times and WashingtonPost websites.

I'm operating VB on a forum for business members and it's easier for them to login using their work email addresses rather than trying to remember the 100+ username and password combinations they may have.

Oh, and since I've added First Name and Last Name as required fields during registration, I'd hope that after they login using the email address, their real name would show up in place of username.

Many thanks for any advice on this!

Snow

Probably, you could just change login.php; I think it handles all login cases. The name as username is a bit more complicated, but could be most simply handled by generating and setting the username whenever the user profile is updated; however, this could be a problem if two users had the same name, because most things run under the assumption that there will only be one user with a given username.

I don't see why they can't just use their mail address as username.

yeah just change all the registration pages so they say [email address] instead of [username] then people will enter there username as their email address

To make it short everyone could jsut use what suits them best. Their first name, email, full name or a nickname. Whatever is easier for them.

I understand it's possible to use email as a user name. But when you are actually logged in and start a thread or post a reply, the email address will show up on the left as your user name. Also, the email address will be your identification on the member list or who's online list. This just doesn't make a lot of sense for the users.

WashingtonPost's model is after you log in using your email address, you'll be greeted using your real name (such as, "welcome back, Joe Gibson" instead of "welcome back, jgibson@yahoo.com). Is there a way to achieve all these at the same time?

No :(

Not without some serious coding.
