How do I ... post icons

I want to uncheck the selected radio button for 'no icon' and at the same time, make posts icons a required field, for NEW THREADS ONLY if possible. So, members posting have to choose their own icon.. if no icon is selected, they are alerted that they must choose one before their THREAD is added.
