Help for a Newbie

Hello all.
I have tried to install, but no luck yet.
I get the usual error msg at stage 2 "The database has failed to connect because you do not have permission to connect to the server. Please confirm the values entered in the 'includes/config.php' file."
BU i can connect to my database, i have edited the config file to the right user/pass settings, and it just wont let me proceed :disappointed:

I just seem to be going round in circles..have followed the manual to the letter, my BD is showing in MyPHP admin, i have changed the password several times just to make sure!

Im really at a blank on this, any tips or ideas would be really helpful!!

Thanks in advance...Clive

It would help if you told us what you are trying to install?

You're installing vBulletin or a hack?

If you're installing vB, then please also your php & mysql version.

I am trying to install VB307, my sql version on my host is 3.23 php4 i think.
Thanks

Did you leave the hostname set to localhost in the config.php?

got1-2 03-09-2005 05:57 PM

yes...

Well if the database is on the same server, you left the hostname to localhost, and set the databasename, the database-user and database-pass correct, all should work.

If the datbase was on a different server, it could be a permission thing, but i never saw a host that is blocking connections to mysql from localhost.

You did set the databasename, did you?

Thats the strange thing, i have set a database on the server, and can access it using Myphpadmin.
Its all done from the admin controll panel/msql managment panel.

It has now been resolved, thanks for your help.
It seems the server didnt recognise localhost, and the congfig variable was changed to 127.0.0.1

Very strange, sounds to me like the /etc/hosts file on your server don't have the localhost entry or the file is not public readable. In both cases i would suspect more (non vB) processes to have troubles on that server.

Is it a linux or windows server?

:smoke: Your right about more trouble..i am trying to configure impex ...here we go again! :surprised:

If you have SSH/telnet access, i suggest you try a "ping localhost" on that server. It MUST respond with 127.0.0.1

Anyway to me it sounds like the server config is really faulty and probably only your host could fix it, but maybe i am complete wrong on this ;)

I suggest you contact your host about this problem.
