Login id different from posting id: prevent bruters!
 

I dont know how you could do this but posssibly create a hack to haveadifferent login id than what is visible to the average user topreventgay brute forcers.. what'da think? :D

Maybe you should explain your idea a bit more. I don't really get what you are trying to ask.

i get it, and its really a good idea, i got this one brute guy driving me nuts, so many members are getting the locked out email

my user name is Keyser Söze but to login my login would be MrFabulous with pass 12345678

so ur login is diffrent from ur acual user name, so even if someone guessed ur password, theyd have to guess ur login name too since it is not public

Basically he is suggesting that you have a display name that is not the same as your login.

The user is still the weak link in this chain. Basicly you are looking for two passwords, if someone really wants to brute force both they will.

If you want to get creative try customizing the way your board hashes passwords. My forum generates a salt based on my own rules and gose about md5 hashing differntly then stock vBulletin. It is possible to convert an existing forum with existing users to this format aswell. :)

jesus.... I just want a simple thing to have a different LOGIN ID thanthe DISPLAY NAME ANYWHERE unless you knew a LOT of stuff on how to lookup the login name.... You see.. My forum has undergroud forums andJEALOUS people brute force people because they know the ids and want toget in.. but if you made the login id which is only used to logging indifferent from the display name it would prevent this..... That's all Iam saying.. No need for other stuff.. I just want this! Sigh..

Yes, like most things, it I'm sure it could be done - but it would, I imagine, mean quite a bit of work as the username appears in an awful lot of places. Don't expect to see it anytime soon.

actually it could be acheived with just two file edits for a quick dirty hack

that's register.php, login.php and session.php ok so that's three but yeah.
