textbox/mysql/dropdown question

is it possable for a textbox to take in a string eg.
store it in a database
then a dropdown gets the contents of the list from the database
eg: input a
input b
(exc)
a's in the database
b's in there
(exc)
read from database
so that the database contents populate a dropdown box
