HOTM change suggestion

I am just making this suggestion but to me I think the HOTM should onyl include hacks that are more than 3-6 months old. Why? Because some hacks go belly up after these even if they are voted HOTM. A great example is the Arcade, Petz and Articles hacks which now are almost completely unsupported.

I think it would reward those outstanding individuals that release hacks and then back up their work with the dedication that many of them show and are unrewarded for.

My personal favorite example is Lierduh and the NNTP hack, THAT is outstanding support over a long period of time.

Just a thought, I am definately no oracle or trying to rock the boat.

Thanks,

-Jason

Just because a modification is unsupported, doesn't mean that it does not warrant HOTM :)

True, that is why I suggested a change ;-)

What you suggests is more or less a user contest.
the HOtM is just based on the modifications itself, not on support or whatever

I disagree, the ability to actually maintain the hack and keep it relevant is just as important as the hack itself.

Look at the different journal hacks until we got one that someone maintained or event he Articles Hack which is nearly useless for 3.03

It alsays good to have a HOTM but what good is that title when 3 months later no one can use the hack?

Good point there, but the HOTM System is automatic. Basicly if im correct it grabs the top 5 most installed hacks released in the current month, then post them as part of a poll. Not really a way for php to make sure hackers are supporting there hacks/

maybe something along side HOTM maybe? like moderators or users could nominate a hack for best support but it may be unfair to those who release good hacks and give great support but are unable to give it frequently due to schedules etc. nice idea though:)

First, let me make it clear I am not trying to denigrate the HOTM contest. I am just trying to find a way to make sure that the folks that stick with their hacks are rewarded.

It is truly frustrating to have a great hack on my site but then cant get anything done with it because the author wont support it, and in some cases wont allow anyone else to do so.

Thanks again,

-Jason

Well it depends on the point of view.

for me the HotM has nothing to do with the support of a user, but of the modification itself, if it's coded good, if it's usefull and so on.

That's why i said your point is more or less a user contest.

Not a user contest per se but more of an Author contest then. As a user I sure as heck cannot create what some of the folks on this site does. But I do think you need some way of rewarding authors who actually stick with their incarnations.
