Confirmation Email sent only once

I would really appreciate if someone can edit the vB Cron file activate.php (./includes/cron/activate.php) to make vB send a confirmation email only once.

Sending more than once often leads to numerous bouncing emails, and has crashed my exim on the server a couple of times.
