Tricky one, how are downloads prepared?

Hi,
I am trying to enable downloads from my forum via a WAP device but I need to understand how attachment.php and the functions function fetch_attachment_path and function file_download in the include file functions_file.php prepare a file for download.

I just need to understand how the information from the attachment table is used to eventually send the user a file, just can't figure out what is going on :dead:
Please help peeps :paranoid:
