2nd Email adress (or sms) for subscription notifications
 

I was thinking, it would be nice to selectively subscribe to certain threads/forums/PM's using an alternate email adress. The true purpose of this would be to selectively recieve an sms alert on my phone with higher priority threads/forums/PM's while still recieving standard email alerts with lesser priority threads/forums/PM's. I wouldn't nessesarily want to recieve all reply notifications via sms, my phone would be ringing like crazy 24/7 :)

I could easily sign up as a member with the email as my SMS and selectively subscribe to threads, but it might be cool to leave it open as an option to all members. Thus a needed hack :)

Any easy way to achieve this do you think?

I've created a new private profile field for members to enter their SMS details. How could I link this as an alternat subscription method? Any idea's?

i think it's possible, but i don't know SMS at all, so i can't say if the processing is complicated to code...

btw, the second email for notifications is a really good idea... i may provide a hack for this single idea later...

I think you just need to be selective about what you subscribe to.

From what I understand, this is all he's asking ...

he has an email address which is converted to SMS (a lot of providers do this... usually something like yournumber@yourprovider.com) and the output is sent to your phone.

There are a lot of instances where I may want to subscribe to threads but not necessarily know about any replies when I am away from my comp. It's really convenient to subscribe to an entire forum (In my case). However, there may be times with customer service issues where I might be watching a thread like a hawk. It would simply be nice to be away from the comp and get a SMS notification when that one thread recieves a reply.

Just as Milorad mentioned most SMS contacts are in the form of an email address. There really wouldn't be much to worry about there except maybe trimming down the email message to a bare minimum. Maybe just including the first x characters of the post?

I'd truly be excited to see something created for this. :)
